South Africans wake up today seeing the first day of lockdown, last week President Ramaphosa announced a 21-day lockdown to combat the spread of Coronavirus. During this period of lockdown, residents are only allowed outside their house for essential goods and travel.
- Food
- Cleaning and hygiene products
- Medical supplies
- Fuel, including coal and gas
- Basic goods, including airtime and electricity
Throughout the night multiple arrests were made due to residents not leaving the streets and many also caught with alcohol in public which is now prohibited.
Police Minister Bheki Cele has made a stance and said that anyone who ignores the lockdown rules and regulations can and will be found guilty of a criminal offense. The Minister also went on to say that this could be a fine or in some cases up to six months imprisonment and even the possibility of both.
Not everyone is breaking the rules
The vast majority of South Africa is in fact following the rules with many taking this time to spend with family or finish jobs around the house. Some people are cleaning, watching movies, enjoying the weather or simply relaxing.
