A student protest over debt has erupted at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said “They forced other students to join them. The crowd grew to around 1 000 students. They moved to Princess Alice Street and set DSW (Durban Solid Waste) bins on fire on the road. Registration has been suspended. The situation is tense. There has been slight damage to UKZN property.”
The protestors torched a student’s car. Four suspects were arrested for public violence.
Police said in a statement that the situation is “stable for now”.
Newslite SA earlier reported of students burning a building at the university.
