South Africa won the first one-day match against Australia at Boland Park in Paarl by 74 runs.
Australia, had to score 292 for the win, were bowled out for 217.
Lungi Ngidi (3/30) made two very important breakthroughs early by getting rid of Australia’s two dangerous starting batsmen, Aaron Finch and David Warner.
Steve Smith (76 of 94 b; 3×4) and Marnus Labuschagne (41) added 84 runs around the third wicket to stabilize the innings. However, it took them 107 balls and especially South Africa’s two spinner bowlers, Keshav Maharaj (1/48) and Tabraiz Shamsi (2/45), kept the pressure on the batsmen.
