Jacob Zuma says he received treatment for his eyes in Cuba.
His “Radical Economic Transformation” supporters welcomed him back with posters and chants at OR Tambo Airport.
Zuma was on an Air France flight via Paris and landed shortly after 11 am. He entered the airport with dark glasses and walked with about ten bodyguards.
He took off his sunglasses to show his eyes to fans. Then he said he was glad to see the fans, “but I’m going to talk for a little while because I’m not healthy”.
After a brief speech, his supporters sang “My President” in the arrivals hall.
Shortly before, they shouted: “We are Zuma” and “Zuma is us”.
Zuma’s supporters are saddened that the Pietermaritzburg High Court issued a warrant for the former president’s arrest earlier this month after not appearing in court. He had to appear on charges of corruption.
Judge Dhaya Pillay then said the warrant is for May 6 when he has to appear again. She also had questions about his medical certificate.
