On Wednesday, there was a torrent of condolence messages on Facebook for the seven-year-old Cape Town girl who died after being caught in the barrage of warring gang members.
Members of the Western Cape gang and public order units were deployed to Ocean View near Kommetjie after Imaan Solomons, 7, and another man were killed in the shooting Tuesday night in Libra Road, Ocean View.
Brig. Western Cape police spokesperson Novela Potelwa said Imaan was shot three times in her chest.
According to Potelwa, she was taken by ambulance to False Bay Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
People expressed their shock and sadness at yet another infant death.
“We lost a beautiful little girl with a soft heart tonight because of gun violence,” Nadeema Stemmet wrote.
Erica Cloete writes: “Innocent children are dying. WHY? When is all this cruelty going to end? SA gets on your knees and prays. ”
According to police, a crowd of people who gathered at the scene after the shooting attacked the police.
“We were forced to deploy the Public Order Unit and the Gang Unit in an effort to calm the mood and bring the situation under control,” says Potelwa.
Potelwa said police also found the body of a 31-year-old man with gunshot wounds. The man was also allegedly shot dead in the gang violence.
Potelwa said both murders were being investigated and police were also trying to determine the identity of the 31-year-old man.
People with information about the murders are asked to contact police’s Stop Crime number on 08600 10111. They can also contact the police on the MySAPS App.
Potelwa says police are still on the scene to watch the situation.
