A jet fuel pipeline exploded in Verwoerd Park, Alberton, on Tuesday morning. People within a 1.5-km radius were apparently asked to evacuate their homes.
CPS Security spokeswoman Angie van der Merwe said police initially informed the security company that people within a 500-meter radius of the gas pipeline had to vacate their homes and buildings. However, they were subsequently notified that people within a 1.5 km radius should evacuate the area.
Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesman Eric Maloka confirmed the explosion.
“Emergency services were called to the scene. No further information is available at this time, ”he says.
According to early indications, the pipeline belongs to Sasol or Transnet.
However, Sasol spokesman Alex Anderson said when asked that the pipeline did not belong to Sasol, but to Transnet.
