Thousands of taxi commuters in Gauteng were forced to use alternative transport on Monday after being left stranded due to the taxi strike.
Members of the trade union Santaco in Gauteng strike because of income dissatisfaction amid regulations on the coronavirus pandemic and fears that banks will start to recover their debt on July 1.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula announced on Friday that the government will allocate R1,1 billion to the taxi industry to help them through the pandemic.
The taxi industry thinks it’s too little money, but according to Mbalula there is still no money to help the industry.
Taxis blocked numerous streets in Pretoria on Monday.
