The five suspects arrested in connection with the murders of Dan (83) and Breggie (79) Brand and their daughter Elzabie, are expected to appear in the Hartswater Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Brig. Northern Cape police spokesperson Mohale Ramatseba said the five appeared on charges of murder, robbery and kidnapping. The suspects are 18, 19, 20, 36 and 42 years old respectively.
The investigation into the killings continues in the meantime.
The Brand couple’s bodies were found in the vicinity of the Takaneng settlement in Taung in the North West on Tuesday afternoon. Elzabie’s body was earlier found in the same area.
NewsliteSA previously reported that the family was allegedly abducted on Sunday during the attack on a smallholding in the Vaalharts irrigation scheme near Hartswater in the Northern Cape. A search for the Brand family was launched after friends of the family went to their home to investigate and found signs of strife and blood.
Four suspects were arrested late Monday night and a fifth suspect was arrested on Tuesday.
Some of the suspects allegedly admitted to killing the couple and their daughter and then started pointing out to the police where the bodies could be found.
The MEC for Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Land Reform and Rural Development in the Northern Cape, Mase Manopole, has meanwhile expressed her condolences to the Brand family’s family and friends.
Manopole also praised the police for the speedy arrests and labeled the crime as one driven by greed.
