Two schools in Gauteng were closed after pupils were infected with the coronavirus, reports Eugenie Gregan.
Noordheuwel High School in Krugersdorp announced on Friday on its Facebook page that the school will close with the second break.
The principal, Dawie Kriel, later said in a letter to parents that one of the matric pupils had been tested positive after one of his family members had contact with someone who had the virus. One of the pupils’ parents was also tested positive.
The pupil in question was at the school last Wednesday.
“After a discussion with the education department, it was decided to close the school and teaching will resume on June 22. Meanwhile, the Department of Education and the Department of Health will handle the matter and make the necessary contact detection, ”the letter states.
Zwartkop High School in Centurion closed on Thursday after a positive matric pupil was tested. A family member of this pupil also had contact with someone who has the virus and the pupil and one of his parents allegedly contracted the virus.
The principal, Dewald Strydom, said in a letter to parents on Friday that the school closed on Thursday and will resume classes on Monday. The pupil in question was at the school on Tuesday morning.
The education and health departments are also taking the necessary steps here.
“In the meantime, the family in question is doing well and they are full of courage. They are in our prayers. The pupil will return if the follow-up test is negative, ”Strydom says in the letter.
