Chris Schutte (59), CEO of poultry producer Astral Foods, as well as dr. Theuns Eloff, the company’s chairman, was tested positive for the coronavirus, the company said on Thursday.
Schutte’s health is already not good after several heart attacks he has had in recent years, and according to the company, he had heart surgery on August 20 last year. He is considered a high-risk patient. He is at home in isolation and under the strict supervision of his doctors, says Astral.
Schutte was home for a few months last year due to heart surgery, and he then told that he had had five heart attacks since he was 30. He has been at the helm of the poultry group for 11 years.
Eloff, a former rector of the North-West University, is also at home in isolation and receiving medical treatment for his symptoms.
The company emphasized that its board meetings had been held on digital platforms since March 27, when the restriction took effect.
Astral’s board wished Eloff and Schutte and their families well and asked that all communication on this be directed to the company’s head office. The company will announce at the appropriate time when Schutte returns to work.
Meanwhile, Astral’s chief financial officer Daan Ferreira will act as central liaison in Schutte’s absence and there is a competent executive management team in place to continue the company’s operations, says Astral.
