Head upside down and with sobs he hides behind his hands. That’s how the alleged killer of Tshegofatso Pule, 28, made his first court appearance on Wednesday.
Muzikayise Malephane, 31, appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court and said he was not going to apply for bail.
Family of Pule sat in the front row of court benches. Tumisang Katake, Pule’s uncle, said outside court that court proceedings will be difficult for the family.
“The arrest and court appearance of the accused is a step in the right direction. We are now preparing ourselves for a difficult road ahead. We will have to relive Tshego’s last moments. But it is a difficult road for our family to prepare for justice for Tshego’s murder. We seek justice, ”says Katake.
Katake says he doesn’t know the accused and is unsure if Pule knew the suspect.
Katake says things are still not going well with the family, especially since they were ready to welcome Pule’s firstborn, a daughter, to the family as well.
“We were so excited about the baby on the way, little did we know that Tshego would be killed,” says Katake.
Pule’s body was found hanging on a tree last Monday. There was a stab wound to her left breast. Pule was eight months pregnant.
She disappeared on June 4 after saying she was going to her boyfriend to get money for baby clothes.
Three days later – after neither the family nor Pule nor her boyfriend could get hold of her – she was reported missing.
Malephane remains in custody and will appear in court again on June 24.
