The Department of Transport has made some changes to taxis as more passengers return to work this month.
According to Mbalula, taxis can now carry passengers between 05:00 and 19:00 with a grace period of one hour to pick up passengers at their respective destinations. No taxis are allowed on the roads between 20:00 and 05:00, the minister said.
Taxis may still only be loaded up to 70% of a vehicle’s capacity. This means that minibuses with the capacity to carry ten passengers will only be able to carry seven passengers. 15-seater minibuses are only allowed to carry ten passengers and 22-seat minibuses can only carry 15 passengers.
Passengers are obliged to disinfect their hands when getting into a taxi. Wearing masks during a ride is still mandatory. Taxis must also be disinfected on a regular basis.
Meter taxis may load up to 50% of a vehicle’s capacity.
Mbalula further said that shuttle buses were allowed at level 4. However, shuttles may only transport essential workers and those returning to work. These vehicles can load up to 50% of a vehicle’s capacity.
Traveling between provinces without a permit is still prohibited at level 4 of seclusion.
