South Africa’s finance minister Tito Mboweni is taking legal action against a woman who threatens to divulge private messages between them.
Mboweni says letters from his lawyer, Jerome Levitz, are being extorted. The woman allegedly threatens to make WhatsApp messages and voicemail public.
The woman was allegedly offered R100 000 to make the messages public.
Mboweni met the woman online, but insists they never met in person or had a romantic relationship.
The woman allegedly wanted R7 000 from Mboweni for rent and registration, which he did not want to pay her.
Correspondence between Levitz and the woman indicates that Mboweni was advised to take further action and report the incident to the police.
“Our client (Mboweni) requested that we advise you of the allegation and invite you to comment and confirm that the allegations are false,” reads part of the correspondence.
