The National Union of Miners, (NUM), threatens to cause more power outages if the government goes ahead with a plan to divide Eskom into smaller parts.
Public Works Minister Pravin Gordhan said earlier that he intended to unbundle Eskom. NUM said in a statement that they were furious at Gordhan’s plans.
The trade union also insists that Eskom should cancel any purchases from private suppliers.
If Gordhan does not heed the demands, NUM threatens to leave the country in darkness. They said if these demands are not met they will go ahead and leave South Africa in complete darkness.
The National Union of Miners is one of the largest trade unions at Eskom and shares trade union federation, Cosatu. They fear Gordhan’s plans could lead to Eskom being privatized.
Gordhan’s plans were welcomed by many South Africans and analysts.
NUM is set to march to Glencore’s offices in Witbank
