The decomposed body of a girl found Wednesday night in a stormwater pipe along the N1 outside Worcester has been identified by DNA and fingerprints as that of Tazne van Wyk (8).
Nomafrench Mbombo, Western Cape MEC of Health, said Tuesday at the state hospital in Worcester that Tazne’s mother, Carmen van Wyk, 28, contacted her office the previous day.
“She was very sad and all she asked was to see her child.” It would be any mother’s request if she lost her child in such circumstances and “all I could do was facilitate the process for them”.
Mbombo also arranged for social workers from the Department of Social Development to provide counseling and prepare people for what they could expect if they insisted on seeing her body. Because the body was at an advanced stage of decomposition, DNA and fingerprints were used to determine the identity.
Mbombo said the parents will now be able to start with the final funeral arrangements.
