A mother, 41, was shot dead Monday night in front of her family in Ikamvelihle, Port Elizabeth.
Notombeko Plaatjies, 41, was shot once in the head and pronounced dead at the local Dora Nginza Hospital.
The attack on Plaatjies unfolded around 8pm as she, her grandmother, her friend, 18-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter watched television that evening when two unknown men burst into their home in Vinjiwi Street.
According to police information, the two men knocked on the kitchen door and asked for Nomathemba.
The two men, one of whom was armed, gained access to the home as the door was not closed.
In the house, Plaatjies told the two men she was not Nomathemba, but the unarmed man took the weapon from his companion and said she was Nomathemba and fired a shot.
Plaatjies, who works as a cook at Enqileni Senior Primary School, was rushed to the hospital by car, but it was too late.
Police spokesperson André Beetge in Port Elizabeth says a murder case is being investigated.
He says it is currently unclear whether the attackers searched for Plaatjies and whether they attacked the wrong person.
Police suspect the incident was a targeted murder as nothing was stolen from the victim.
