An epileptic seizure apparently caused the death of a 10th grader when he fell to his death from the third floor of the Ferndale High School in Johannesburg.
Gauteng Education Department spokesman Steve Mabona said the 16-year-old had an epileptic attack.
“According to the information at our disposal, the pupil had an epileptic attack which led to him jumping off the third floor,” says Mabona.
The pupil died in hospital from his injuries.
Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng’s MEC of education, will visit the school and the pupil’s family on Wednesday. Counselors have already been sent to school.
This is the 11th death in Gauteng schools over the past year.
A 17-year-old student in Gr. 11 at Tharabollo Secondary School in Vereeniging allegedly took her own life at her home on Sunday.
According to Mabona, she was home alone when she drank poison.
“She was rushed to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at her arrival. The police are investigating her death. “
The department also sent counselors to the school.
Lesufi calls for divine intervention
Lesufi recently called for divine intervention after more deaths and disturbing incidents were reported in the first week of February.
