A senior Pietermaritzburg State Attorney has died after being shot in a KwaZulu-Natal court on Monday when a shot was fired from a loaded shotgun, which was believed to be evidence.
Adv. Addelaid Ferreira-Watt, 51, was hit in the left hip but later died in hospital, according to a statement by Brig. Police spokesman Jay Naicker was released.
“The weapon was apparently brought to court for evidence in a home robbery case when a shot was accidentally fired in court.”
Naicker said more information could not be released at this time.
The incident happened in the Ixopo regional court.
Attorney Elaine Zungu, the director of public prosecutions in KwaZulu-Natal, confirmed Ferreira-Watt’s death in a statement.
“Her death affects us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. The family requested that their privacy be respected, ”says Zungu.
