Two attackers stiffened their belts when they attacked an elderly couple on a holding at Bloemspruit outside Bloemfontein.
The two suspects broke down the security gate and door of the home in the Shannon area on Saturday night. An alarm went off, but the suspects continued to assault the couple, apparently 70 and 80 years old.
Free State Police spokeswoman Thandi Mbambo said the attackers were armed with a panga and a hammer.
“Two Senforce security guards responded to the alarm and found the two suspects still in the home.”
The suspects tried to attack the security guards, after which one of the attackers was shot dead. They were also able to arrest the other attacker.
ER24 spokesman Ross Campbell said the couple suffered serious head injuries. “They were treated at the scene before being taken to Mediclinic Bloemfontein for further medical treatment.” The attacker was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Mbambo said a cellphone of the couple was found in the assailant’s shot. The arrested suspect will appear in Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Police have opened an inquest and are investigating home robbery and assault cases with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
