A serial killer and rapist has been sentenced to six times life in prison over the past week.
Nkosinathi Alpeos Ngcobo, 32, was also sentenced to an additional 146 years in jail in Scottburgh, KwaZulu-Natal High Court. He was found guilty of murder, attempted murder, rape, armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Hawks spokesman Simphiwe Mhlongo said Ngcobo was arrested in 2017 on charges of double murder and rape. “However, the prosecutor has decided not to prosecute and has instead decided on an inquest.”
Ngcobo was arrested again in 2018 – this time on a charge of armed robbery. Mhlongo said his legal team attempted to have the charges withdrawn at a technical point, but the local magistrate refused. The magistrate gave the investigating team three days to collect evidence for a bail application.
According to Mhlongo, it was then determined that Ngcobo was a serial killer and rapist who could be linked to 22 cases of murder, attempted murder, rape, armed robbery and house-breaking through DNA.
Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya welcomed the sentence.
“It is disappointing that some people have no respect for the lives of others. I am satisfied that the accused was sentenced for a long period. The work of the investigation and prosecution team is commendable, ”Lebeya said.
