A fourteen-year-old girl was killed and nearly 20 huts destroyed when a fire broke out in the Ndulini informal settlement in KwaZakele in the Eastern Cape.
That fire started Monday around 13:30.
“Onlookers heard the screams of ZIntle Manganya Zabo, who was trapped in a burning hut. They tried to break open the door, but the fire raged and spread quickly to surrounding houses, ” Police spokesperson André Beetge said.
“The girl burned to death.”
About 20 homes have been destroyed and nearly 100 people are homeless and desperate for help, Beetge said.
“The cause of the fire is not yet known.”
Beetge said the Somali community in the area donated blankets to the affected residents. The Nelson Mandela Bay disaster management and other charities have already begun donating blankets and mattresses to residents. There is still a need for clothes, bedding, and food. Police thanked those who had already donated.
