Schools will open their doors on April 16, says Elijah Mhlanga, spokeswoman for the national department of basic education.
The schools closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic on March 18, and Angie Motshekga, the department’s minister, initially said in a March 16 speech that the schools would reopen on April 14.
Then, in the Government Gazette of March 18, it was announced that the schools would be closed until April 15.
Mhlanga confirmed on Monday morning that the schools will be reopened at this stage on April 16, but emphasized that this is dependent on a further announcement by Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa can still be changed.
Ramaphosa is expected to announce further measures to combat the Covid-19 virus disease on Monday night.
