Amid fears of further tensions in the Middle East, South Africa have announced for that citizens living in Iraq should seek help to ensure they are safe.
The attack that was carried out on Qasem Soleimani is seen to destabilise the region and analysts expect to see more blood shed in the near future.
The Department International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) released a public statement on Friday
“The South African Government is alarmed by the escalating tension in Iraq, which has far reaching ramifications not only for the Middle East region, but also for international peace and security.”
It’s unknown how many South Africans are currently residing in Iraq but due to the current affairs DIRCO have advised that if you residing in Iraq it’s your responsibility to ensure your safety. As reported by IOL “Unfortunately not everyone informs us. It isn’t Dirco’s responsibility to keep track of the number of people travelling abroad. Home Affairs does through emigration,”
Nelson Kgwete, public spokesperson published a post on Facebook in an attempt to reach out to fellow South Africans
The aim of the evacuation plan is to prevent fellow South Africans to be caught in the firing line and ensure they can be safe if refuge is needed.
