At a special cabinet meeting on Thursday, the government decided to extend the national disaster by one month to 15 July.
Spokesman Jackson Mthembu said Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the Minister of Cooperative Government, had submitted the request and the Cabinet approved it.
A national disaster can, by law, be announced for a period of three months and renewed for another month if necessary. Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa announced a national disaster on March 18 in response to the Covid 19 pandemic.
Mthembu says the Cabinet did not discuss the latest developments around the WHO.
But the government has full confidence in the WHO and its head. The WHO has led the world and the continent on how to handle the pandemic.
The WHO has provided wonderful guidelines for all of us. Therefore, the government appreciates its guidelines.
