Professor Salim Abdool Karim, the chairperson of the committee at the forefront of the virus advising the government has announced that South Africa is ready for Level 3.
“We see how this epidemic and the way it has impacted in several countries, we have seen there is a period of rapid growth, we avoided that initially,” said Professor Karim
Speaking on ENCA Professor Karim was asked if 40,000 deaths by the end of the year is realistic in which he responds “They are plausible”.
“When we look at what the peak will look like, it could be around those numbers” said Professor Karim
The professor goes on to say how South African’s can lower the peak by being aware and also social distancing. If social distancing is followed this could bring down the projected death rate at the peak of the virus.
“It is in our hands, if we choose not to follow those rules then we can expect that the peak might even be bigger,” said Professor Karim
As of May 21st 2020, South Africa has 19,137 confirmed cases of which 8950 have recovered and 369 deaths
