A waiting prisoner broke both legs when he escaped from the detention cells at the Thohoyandou police station in Limpopo and jumped off the building’s roof.
Justice Rhudzani Muvhango, 34, allegedly tried to escape on Monday.
Motlafela Mojapelo, Limpopo police spokesman, said an injured Muvhango then crawled into the Thohoyandou police station.
He told police in the charge office that a car hit him outside the police station and the driver apparently drove away. Muvhango did not have an overall suit indicating that he is awaiting trial.
Police officers in the indictment office, who did not know he was awaiting trial, took him to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Mojapelo says in the hospital, a Thohoyandou police station police officer who looks after awaiting prisoners recognized Muvhango. He was just arrested again.
Muvhango is now under police supervision in the hospital. It is not clear when he will be fired.
Mojapelo says Muvhango is awaiting trial for a string of offenses that include murder, robbery at businesses, intentional property damage and possession of an illegal firearm. He has already appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court because of these offenses.
When he returns to court, Muvhango will also face trial for escape from police custody.
