AfriForum previously contacted the South African Police Service to seek information regarding the amnesty extension. Today Afriforum received a response that Bheki Cele, Minister of Police could increase the amnesty.

This comes after Brig. Lawrence Nkgweng responded to say that Cele has indeed approached the Parliament to increase the amnesty period.

The letters sent by Cele were directed towards the Speaker of the National Assembly and he awaits a response.

“The Minister now awaits replies from the Portfolio Commission of Police, as well as the Select Committee on Security and Justice, as this request must first go through these two committees before it can be referred to the National Council of Provinces and eventually the National Assembly for approval,” said Afriforum

The motive behind the pressure given to Cele was due to the issues that lockdown has caused for citizens. Afriforum states that the lockdown could prevent gun owners from handing their weapons into the police and could technically cause legal issues for them if caught.
