Police are searching for the man who killed a young pregnant woman from Colville, Kimberley, with a cement block after he allegedly strangled her as well.
Jolene Muller, 22, who was five months pregnant, was allegedly strangled by an unknown man on Saturday afternoon. He also hit her on the head several times with a cement block.
She died of her wounds later that night in a hospital.
Muller allegedly used a freeway from Colville to Homestead when she was attacked. “Security guards working at the education department’s building saw a man attack the woman and tried to help, but they could not immediately get to the scene.
“They contacted the police and the ambulance, but the attacker was already gone,” Griqua says.
He said the Colville community was outraged by the attack.
The residents are now calling on the police to bring back Operation Wanyana Tsotsi as it has had a greater impact on crime in the area, Griqua says.
“We also call on the Sol Plaatje municipality to do their job. They need to clean the area and restore the lights to secure dark areas.
“Police must also drive more patrols in areas that are dark and unsafe. We have a big problem with drugs in Colville. This leads to robberies and house burglaries. We have long been asking for a satellite police station here, ”he says.
According to Griqua, the poverty and lack of work and development in the area also contribute to drug and alcohol abuse, leading to further crime.
Griqua called on residents and the government to help the Muller family give Jolene an appropriate burial.
