The DA’s federal council will decide at the end of July whether the party will hold a virtual federal congress to elect its new permanent leaders.
Greg Krumbock, DA MP and presiding officer for the planned federal congress, said Friday that a preliminary October 31 deadline for Congress was proposed over two days.
“Unfortunately, we have the challenge of the state of restriction and safe distances that must be maintained at meetings at all times. Therefore, consideration should now be given to holding the congress virtual. “
However, according to Krumbock, the DA will hold a meeting of its federal council on July 31.
“A proposal for a virtual meeting will be tabled at the meeting where the 150 delegates will decide on it.
“If they approve, it will definitely take place from 31 October to 1 November. If it is voted to hold a physical federal congress, we will have to postpone it due to the current restriction until next year. “
The party initially wanted to hold its policy congress on April 4 and 5 and its federal election congress on May 30 and 31. However, both were canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic and state of restriction.
The Federal Election Congress would be held to elect a new federal leader following Mmusi Maimane’s resignation as leader and DA member.
Krumbock says although John Steenhuisen, interim DA leader, John Moodey, Gauteng DA leader, and Mbali Ntuli, DA MPW in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature, indicated earlier this year that they would compete for the top post in the DA nobody at this stage has officially nominated for any of the available leadership positions.
The posts that delegates will decide at the federal congress are those of the federal leader, federal chairman and three federal deputy chairpersons.
“The nominations for the posts open on 1 September. The nomination process will close on October 10. Any candidate who qualifies will be able to apply for the position. We will therefore only have a final nomination list after the deadline. ”
Krumbock says about 2,075 delegates are expected for the federal congress. “That makes it one of the largest federal congresses to date.”
Under a constitutional amendment passed at the last federal congress, up to 45% of delegates may not be elected public officials.
“That means ordinary DA members at branch level will have a very significant vote at the federal congress. That will make Congress much more democratic. ”
According to Krumbock, the DA’s federal council will also elect a new chairman and two deputy chairmen at its first session after the federal congress. This meeting usually takes place immediately after the federal congress in the same hall.
The position of chairman of the federal council is now occupied by Helen Zille.
Mike Moriarty, DA chairman in Gauteng, announced on Thursday he would also throw his name in the hat for the post.
