The Independent Police Investigation Directorate is investigating an incident in which a police officer shot and killed his girlfriend’s sister in George in the Western Cape, after which he later turned the firearm on himself.
Mzwamadoda Fuzani was attached to the Middelburg police in the Eastern Cape and was not on duty at the time of the incident.
Sontage Seisa said in a statement Fuzani shot and killed his girlfriend’s sister in the Thembalethu informal settlement in George, leaving behind his girlfriend, also a Middelburg police officer.
However, Seisa said Fuzani could not find his girlfriend and realized that the police were on his way. He then killed himself around 200 km from Middelburg in his vehicle with the same firearm.
Nneke Ledwaba, the provincial police commissioner in Limpopo, visited the scene. He said police have structures to assist their members who are going through a difficult time and are experiencing problems at home. He asked the police officers to use the service.
Police are investigating a murder case and are also conducting an inquest.
