A 38-year-old Kabokweni police officer in Mpumalanga has been arrested on two counts of murder and attempted murder. The police officer was not on duty at the time of the alleged offenses.
Brig. Police spokesman Leonard Hlathi said in a statement that the police officer went to visit his girlfriend, 34, in Pienaar on Sunday night, where he caught up with another man.
Hlathi said an argument broke out between him, the girlfriend and the other man, after which the police officer allegedly shot the man with his service pistol.
“The police officer was then on a murder charge and fatally wounded his girlfriend as she ran to her parents’ house to call for help,” says Hlathi.
The police officer also allegedly shot his girlfriend’s brother when they became involved in the fight.
Hlathi said emergency services were called to the scene. The girlfriend and her lover were pronounced dead at the scene. The brother was taken to a hospital for medical treatment and the police officer was arrested.
The suspect is expected to appear in Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Mpumalanga police chief Mondli Zuma strongly condemned the incident.
“The suspect is a police officer who is supposed to ensure the safety of communities and has to uphold the law at all times,” Zuma said.
