Police seized an entire consignment of cigarettes at a roadblock between Gauteng and Limpopo.

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety said in a statement on Saturday that the 32-year-old suspect was arrested on the N1 near the Carousel toll gate. He was in possession of 87 600 packets of Remington Gold cigarettes with a value of approximately R800 000.

Gauteng traffic officials arrested the man. He is in custody and will later appear in the Temba Magistrate’s Court on charges of unlawful possession and trafficking of cigarettes, as well as for possession of a forged seclusion document.

The department praised the officers for “creating safer communities”.

“Performances like these are essential during the COVID-19 seclusion period to reverse the crime tide. Law enforcement agencies will continue to disrupt the demand for and supply of illegal goods and will ensure that the syndicates responsible for its production are caught, ”said Gauteng Traffic Police spokesman Obed Sibasa.
