Police officers in Vermont near Hermanus in the Western Cape drove into a substation early Wednesday morning while pursuing suspected poachers and shooting occupants of a vehicle.
Police confirmed that two police officers were injured when their vehicle hit the substation in Lynx Road.
An attempted murder case is being investigated.
Residents noticed on social media early this morning that power was down in that part of the Overstrand municipality and a fire was reported at the substation.
Eskom switched on the power again at 08:30. The crash happened around 4 p.m.
Sgt. Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed that the police were on the track of a vehicle with suspected poachers when they crashed.
Both police officers were hospitalized.
“The detectives are following all the clues to arrest the criminals,” Rwexana said.
