A couple and their son were attacked with a panga on their farm outside Mbombela, Mpumalanga on Sunday morning.
Leonard Hlathi, the provincial police spokesman, said four men entered their house at around 2 am and attacked the elderly couple with pangas.
“Their son woke up and got involved in a fight with one of the suspects. The one suspect was shot. The victim (son) was also shot in the leg. “
Hlathi said the remaining suspects dragged their injured partner out of the house, left his firearm in the house and stole the son’s licensed firearm.
Hlathi said when police arrived, they found the wounded suspect dead. His friends left him just a few meters from the house. The victims were all taken to the hospital.
Police are investigating a case of house robbery, attempted murder and the illegal possession of a firearm.
Hlathi says the other suspects are still at large. Anyone who can help with information should call their nearest police station, ”says Hlathi.
