Hendry Brown died in a hospital on Tuesday morning after he, his wife and his son were assaulted with a panga and axe in November on their farm outside Mbombela (Nelspruit) in Mpumalanga.
Albert Gryvenstein of the Bossies Community Justice organization confirmed Hendry’s death.
Brown was allegedly stabbed in the face with an axe and has since been in a coma in a hospital in Mbombela. “He never woke up,” says Gryvenstein.
Hendry, 77, and Martie, 74, were attacked with an axe and panga in their farmhouse on the Uitkyk road near Mabalel in early November. Their son Tommy, 52, woke up and started wrestling with one of the attackers.
Tommy was shot in the process and sustained serious injuries to his skull and jaw. The attacker was also wounded. Police found the wounded assailant’s body about 300 meters from the scene where he died.
According to Gryvenstein, meanwhile things are going better with Martie and Tommy. “Martie just doesn’t want to go back to the farm. She’s been there a few times, but she says she can’t sleep there. Tommy still has to undergo reconstruction work on his face, ”he says.
The couple has lived on the farm for the past 53 years.
