The votes were as follow:
Geoff Makhubo (ANC) – 137
Funzela Ngobeni (DA) – 101
Musa Novela (EFF) – 30
The ANC’s Geoff Makhubo was elected as the new executive mayor of the city of Johannesburg.
He was elected at a meeting of the Johannesburg metro council on Wednesday.
The initial session to elect a new mayor was postponed last Thursday by the speaker, Vasco de Gama.
Da Gama wanted to get a legal opinion after there was uncertainty about what a majority would vote for.
The council has 270 seats, but one seat is vacant following the death of Councilman David Monamodi.
The ANC has 121 seats in the council, the DA 104 and the EFF have 30 seats.
Gauteng Prime Minister David Makhura warned in the run-up to Wednesday that the provincial government would intervene if a new mayor is not soon elected.
The DA nominated Funzela Ngobeni and the EFF’s candidate was Musa Novela.
