More than a thousand doctors, nurses and other workers in the Western Cape public health sector have contracted the coronavirus.
Six of them died, the province’s health department announced Wednesday.
61 doctors were infected with the virus, 560 nursing staff and 389 other health professionals. 462 of them have already completely recovered.
A doctor and a nurse at a private health facility also died. There have also been 170 confirmed cases at these establishments, of which 126 have already recovered.
The department says in a statement that a health facility is a meeting place where the risk of distribution will always be high.
Most infections occurred at Tygerberg Hospital (221), followed by Groote Schuur Hospital (130) and Khayelitsha Hospital (61).
A total of 26 members of the provincial emergency services also contracted the virus.
