The Department of Correctional Services confirmed that three more correctional officers tested positive for COVID-19 onThursday. All three cases were reported by prisons in the Western Cape.
That brings the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases at correctional centers in the Western Cape to 40 – 38 officers and two prisoners. One death case is being investigated.
Department spokeswoman Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed 144 cases of COVID-19 have been reported to correctional centers nationwide so far.
A total of 35 officers and 56 prisoners in the Eastern Cape have tested positive for COVID-19 to date. Another two corrections officers in Limpopo and one at the department’s head office also tested positive.
Gauteng on Tuesday reported its first COVID-19 case in a jail in the Johannesburg area. This province currently has 10 cases, of which three are officers and seven are inmates.
Nxumalo confirmed that three officers had already recovered.
