The body of a teenage girl from Mpumalanga who was allegedly abducted last week was found by a family member in a pit toilet at her home on Saturday.
Brig. Police spokesman Leonard Hlathi said a 19-year-old man, a relative of the 14-year-old girl, was arrested on Monday in connection with her death.
According to Hlathi, the girl’s family last saw her on Wednesday and the next day received threatening messages on their cellphone, as well as a demand to pay a ransom for her release.
Police were notified and a case of kidnapping was filed.
Hlathi says it is suspected that the teenager was intoxicated before her death.
The man will appear in the Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of murder.
“However, the investigation team said that further investigation work still needed to be done.”
He says more charges could possibly be added against the man.
