Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, attended a media briefing today claiming that he has news for South African taxpayers, the minister is making plans to regulate and formalize the taxi industry.
Mbalula has said when coronavirus came to South Africa he embarked on a journey to provide safer transport in the country, the minister also says that he remains on the journey as it’s not over yet.
“When coronavirus arrived in this country and visited us, I was on the journey and I am still on that journey. Engaging with the industry to address issues of professionalizing the industry.”
Mbalula has plans to transform the industry, he accepts that the taxi industry as a whole has been hard hit. The Minister and government have in principal agreed that they will support the taxi industry financially.
The details on how this will be done remain unknown at this stage of his journey, however, the minister said that in the coming weeks he can come back and report on the details and plans put in place.
