Police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a man was shot and his family attacked with crowbars.
The incident happened on Monday night at the Tshwane Muslim School in Laudium.
The victim, who works at the school, left a meeting at the school when he was stopped by an unknown group of suspects.
Ibrahim Dockrat, chairman of disaster management for Laudium, says the man, his wife, and son were attacked when they left home after the meeting. Their home is located behind the school.
According to preliminary information, he was shot while trying to protect his family. The woman and son were allegedly assaulted with a crowbar.
The man was shot in the abdomen and shoulder and later transported to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg, where he underwent surgery.
According to Dockrat, one of the bullets got stuck in his spine.
The victim was in a critical but stable condition Tuesday night. His wife and son were also hospitalized, but have since been treated and discharged for minor injuries.
Dockrat confirmed that the incident happened on the school grounds. He said the suspects appeared to be trying to break into the school.
Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed the incident and said an attempted murder case was being investigated.
“Police received information about a shooting incident at the Tshwane Muslim School in Laudium. The police responded quickly to the information given, “Masondo said in a statement.
“The victim was shot and wounded in the torso and the other victims sustained injuries.”
