A man who raped a 90-year-old woman in her Bloemfontein home has been jailed in the Supreme Court for 20 years.
Majoro Jonas Mahoko, 27, was also severely assaulted by the community after he was arrested near the victim’s home just after the rape.
Police saved him from further assault by the people.
He pleaded guilty before Judge Corné van Zyl on a charge of raping the woman in the JB Mafora neighborhood on the evening of February 19, 2019.
In his plea deal with the state, he says he pretended to be looking for her son. The elderly woman was alone in the house.
He forced her to her bedroom, where he pushed her headscarf into her mouth to prevent her from screaming.
He then raped her.
When he was done, a neighbor arrived. As he left, the neighbor called for help. People in a bakkie arrested Mahoko and brought him back to the elderly woman’s home.
A group of people gathered there. The elderly woman identified him as the man who raped her.
The people who gathered there grabbed him and assaulted him until the police came to his rescue.
In a sentencing agreement with the state, it has been mitigated that he has been in custody since the rape and is facing severe jail time. He also took care of his girlfriend and her child before his arrest.
He is a first offender and shows remorse.
