The death rate of pupils at schools in Gauteng is increasing almost daily.
Numerous incidents have also occurred since Friday that led to pupils in the province receiving medical treatment.
Panyaza Lesufi, MEC for the Department of Education, announced the death of a gr. 5 pupil that attended Diepsloot Primary School.
Lesufi said the pupil, a girl, was struck by lightning as she walked home with schoolmates on Friday afternoon.
On the same day, a gr. 3 pupil at Zenzeleni Primary School died after a short illness in his sleep.
The boy died at home.
Lesufi says their team of psychologists will visit all schools involved on Monday to provide counseling and other necessary assistance.
“We would like to express our condolences to the families, friends, and the wider school community of both pupils during this difficult time.
“It’s emotionally exhausting, but we continue to steam,” Lesufi says.
On Friday, about 16 pupils from Vusisizwe Primary School in Zola, Soweto, were rushed to the clinic for treatment after eating decayed sweets.
The pupils bought the sweets at the school.
