As Gauteng schools prepare to reopen on June 1, Panyaza Lesufi, the province’s MEC for education, is concerned about schools on the West Rand after 160 miners in the area tested positive for the coronavirus.
Fin24 reports 164 miners from the Ashanti Mponeng mine in the Merafong district have been tested positive. Most of them are asymptomatic.
Lesufi said on a visit to Ga-Rankuwa Primary School on Tuesday that the department is asking for advice from the Department of Health about schools located near this district.
“We will be advised by the MEC for health and the prime minister about the possibility of reopening schools in that area only later.”
Gr. 7s and matrics are expected to return to schools on Monday after losing more than 50 school days.
Lesufi encourages schools to put employee and pupil safety first: “If schools are not ready to reopen, they should do so when they are ready.”
