Large spread of COVID-19 in SA prisons

At least 755 cases of Covid-19 have already been reported to the Department of Correctional Services.

The department said in a statement on Wednesday that eight officers in the Western Cape tested positive and one officer in Gauteng tested positive.

Nationwide, 273 officers tested positive for Covid-19 and 482 prisoners. A total of 173 individuals have already recovered and six people have died.

The Eastern Cape has the highest case infections (490 cases): 77 officers and 413 prisoners. Three deaths were reported and 72 people recovered.

In the Western Cape, the current epicenter of the country’s coronavirus outbreak, 229 cases have been reported (172 officers and 57 prisoners) with three deaths and 98 recovering.

Limpopo has only two cases of officers who sustained Covid-19 and one person who recovered.

Gauteng reported 20 cases involving 12 prisoners and eight officers who tested positive. Ten people recovered.

The Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal have two officers who contracted the virus, respectively. In the Free State one case was reported and one person recovered.

At the department headquarters in Pretoria, one officer contracted the virus and one person recovered.
