Five people were seriously injured Tuesday morning when a truck and a pickup truck collided on M1-Higginson Highway in KwaZulu-Natal. The accident occurred just after the N2 bridge in Chatsworth.
Rescue Care spokeswoman Garrith Jamieson says paramedics were called to the scene just after 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, where they found the damaged vehicles in the road.
The vehicles blocked the N2 exit south, which affected the traffic flow.
One passenger of the bakkie was still trapped in the vehicle. Rescuers from the Durban Fire and Rescue Service as well as Netcare 911 paramedics had to use mechanical rescue jaws and other hydraulic rescue tools to free him from the bakkie.
After rescue workers freed the man from the vehicle, he was taken to the nearest hospital.
Four other occupants who each drove in one of the vehicles were also injured and stabilized at the scene by paramedics, before being taken to hospital for further medical treatment.
The cause of the accident is not yet known.
The metro police and police were on the scene to investigate further.
