Independent candidates should be allowed to participate in national and provincial elections.

The Constitutional Court decision was announced in Johannesburg on Thursday morning.

The appeal application was brought by the New Nation Movement organization and other parties. They argued that the Electoral Act was unconstitutional because it was not previously allowed. The Constitutional Court agreed.

The applicants turned to the court after the high court rejected their initial application.

Parliament was given 24 months to change the Electoral Act.

The Constitutional Court just declared the sections in the #ElectoralAct restricting elections to political parties https://t.co/ixFNz9yKdX’s not the whole Act.Parliament is ordered to make provision for independent and other candidates to stand in national & provincial elections
