A Bethelsdorp homeowner in the Eastern Cape fought back fiercely against two men who entered his home and in the process fatally wounded one of the men.
The 55-year-old man and his wife were in the kitchen at about 9pm on Friday night in their Greenfields home when they heard a loud banging on their front door, ”said Col. Police spokesman Priscilla Naidu.
“Two men were outside the door and demanded access to the house. The owner refused their access, after which they began to open the door and a window. “
The two men entered the house and a fight broke out between the owner and the suspects, armed with a knife and a panga. “The suspects allegedly threatened to stab the owner with the knife, after which he armed himself with a knife to protect him and his wife.”
One of the suspects, a 19-year-old man, was stabbed in the chest with a knife and died at the scene. The other man ran away after this. The deceased has since been identified as Luthando Ndude, a neighbor of the homeowner.
Naidu said the other suspect’s identity is known, but he has not yet been arrested. Police are investigating a murder case against the homeowner and a case of housebreaking against the suspects.
“The homeowner has not been arrested and once the investigation is complete, the case will be referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office to decide whether the homeowner will be charged.”
