A hijacking gang who wore police uniforms on Monday asked their victims to forgive them and advised them to go for trauma counseling.
Brig. Provincial police spokesman Leonard Hlathi said the hijackers robbed three tourists of their Toyota Fortuner and other valuables on Monday near the Total Petroport on the N12 near Delmas, Mpumalanga.
Robbers in police uniforms have been arrested in the area in the past, but there appears to be more than one group operating in the syndicate, Hlathi says.
He says trucks are also pulled over and robbed.
Hlathi admits police resources are too limited to patrol the N12, R50, R42 and R555 all the time. Consequently, patrol cars are being relied upon to help.
“Some robbers pretend to be cops and others as traffic officers. Motorists in the area should rather continue driving to the nearest police station or gas station if they feel unsafe when a blue-light car tries to pull them off the road. ”
