West Point Processors on the West Coast withdrew their 400g cans of Pilchards in tomato sauce from the market on Saturday.
Pilchards from West Point’s factory are sold under six different brands, including home name brands of Shoprite (Ritebrand), Checkers, OK and U-Save. In addition, it is also sold as West Point and Saldanha.
Consumers are advised to check if they have any of the brand names on their shelf with the code ZST2 or ZSC2 printed on top.
It only applies to Pilchards in tomato sauce, no other canned fish.
The Shoprite Group said in a statement on Sunday morning that they reacted quickly:
“We have ensured that no further affected product could be sold in our stores.”
Shoprite calls on people to check their food boxes. If they have the cans in question, they can take it back to the supermarket group where it was purchased and they will get their money back.
